Our People

Stephen Banker - President, Owner

Stephen Banker

Stephen loves the challenge of building custom pieces, so if you were told it can't be done, he will usually find a way to build it. He is always looking for better and faster ways of building things and is continuously searching for new woods and materials to incorporate into each project

On a personal level, Stephen is passionate about living a pure life and treating others with respect and honor. He enjoys being able to walk home most days to have lunch with his wife Sandy and their four children, and when possible takes the time to hike, mountain bike, and camp with his family or just spend time with his kids roasting marshmallows in their fire pit.

His goals in life are the following:

  • To grow Joshua Tree Cabinetry into a increasingly stable and noteworthy business in Helena and beyond.
  • To be an example for his children, equipping them for what they need to succeed in whatever they choose to do.
  • To fall in love more deeply with his bride Sandy and spend many special times together.
  • To live like a Kings kid, unspoiled, responsible and trustworthy.

Our History

Joshua Tree Cabinetry was founded in the spring of 1992. Stephen Banker began Joshua Tree Cabinetry in Lancaster PA working out of a one car garage with a small assortment of hand tools and the most basic of power tools.

The next facility - a rented two car garage in Colmar, PA - allowed the space for a few machines like a small jointer, bandsaw and a tablesaw. Sandy and Stephen purchased their first home in 1995 which included a oversized three car garage with an walk in attic. More space allowed for more production and more machines.

During these first few years of business Stephen mostly worked alone providing the eastern PA area with the same quality workmanship and service we are still known for today. Some of the first projects included some furnishings for some downtown Lancaster PA stores, an sassafras wall to wall curio display cabinetry, a sassafras farmhouse kitchen, a Birdseye maple kitchen, a pickled maple kitchen complete with custom woodturnings, and two executive offices for a Philadelphia trucking company.

During 1997 we considered relocating to Montana to enjoy a less stressful pace of life and to enjoy the outdoors more. After careful consideration we made the move to Helena, MT in the late summer of 1998. For the first few years Stephen shared a facility and even the workload with a kindhearted cabinetmaker who had a established business here in Helena. It was a great way for Stephen to make the transition to a new area far from home. In time, Stephen and Sandy bought some land and decided to build their own place consisting of a 4000 sq ft shop, convert an existing building on the property to a office and showroom, and also to build a home for themselves.

Joshua Tree Cabinetry has grown into a meduim sized business consisting of five full time people. We continue to purchase new equipment that offers faster production times and increased safety. Our latest purchases include a highly efficient and accurate Martin sliding table saw, and a Whirlwind upcut saw with a computerized Tiger fence system.
